In the Legislature, I have worked to ensure our criminal statutes protect Nevadans, including strengthening penalties against scams targeting senior citizens and modernizing our child pornography statutes to keep pace with new technology. As Attorney General, I will continue to ensure that Nevadans' rights are being protected and that we have the necessary tools to prosecute bad actors. At the same time, I support diversion courts and community based solutions, especially for veterans, people with serious mental health addiction issues, or those who may need additional community supports once released. Prevention strategies, especially for younger Nevadans, can help prevent entry into the criminal justice system in the first place.
I do not support the deployment of federal agents for adjunct law enforcement duties. This past November, I was proud to help write the law banning ICE from entering schools without a warrant. Except for very limited circumstances, Governors have control over the National Guard, and federal agents should only be deployed with the consent of state and local leaders.
State attorneys general have a critical role to play with respect to immigration enforcement. If elected, I would work to provide guidance to state agencies, local governments, and residents to ensure Nevadans are informed of their constitutional rights and that those rights are being respected by agencies with immigration responsibilities. State attorneys general also serve as a critical firewall against federal overreach, including challenging the withholding of funds or preventing the conditioning of funding on cooperation with ICE.
