I have been General Sessions Judge since July 1, 2025. I love this job despite its countless hours and the tensions, tears, and anguish of families in turmoil, parents struggling with their children and children needing a better chance at success in life. The passion inside me is to utilize the justice system to rehabilitate and transform lives of those who have the willingness and desire for positive growth while meeting strict qualifications under the law. Washington County Mental Health Court is a treatment court that I preside over. Participants in this court have been charged with a crime, have a diagnosed mental health disorder and typically are drug addicted. We maintain constant supervision and accountability for these individuals.
The majority of our cases have some tie or relation to public safety and substance abuse. From criminal and juvenile matters, to orders of protection in civil matters, every type of case we hear is likely impacted by illegal substance use or involvement. The drugs themselves are a public safety issue but the conduct of the ones utilizing drugs can be extremely dangerous and hazardous to everyone including themselves. How we handle these issues as society and through our courts is going to shape our community tremendously. Treatment and rehabilitative courts such as Recovery Court and Mental Health Court are useful in addressing these issues.
