Responsibilities: The General Division has original jurisdiction in criminal felony cases and in civil cases in which the amount in controversy exceeds $15,000.00.Civil cases encompass a wide range of lawsuits including: negligence, property disputes, breach of contract, foreclosure, workers compensation and appellate jurisdiction over the decisions of some state administrative agencies.There is a court of common pleas in each of Ohio's 88 countiesCommon pleas court judges are elected to six-year terms on a non-partisan ballot. A person must be an attorney with at least six years of experience in the practice of law to be elected or appointed to the court.
