Richardson Charter Amend. Prop XX

Shall Article 3, Section 3.07 Council Vacancies of the Home Rule Charter be amended to add subsection (c) to provide that if the mayor or a council member announce their candidacy for another elective public office other than the office then held or for another place on the city council or becomes a candidate for another elective public office other than the office then held, after the effective date of this subsection (c), such candidacy shall constitute an automatic resignation from office? This amendment would require the mayor or a city council member to automatically resign from their current office if they announce or become a candidate for a different elective public office. In effect, running for another office would create an automatic vacancy in their current position.

Proponents say: Automatic resignation ensures council members are not distracted by campaigning for another office. The city can move forward with the process of filling the vacancy.
Opponents say: If the council member is forced to resign, then their constituents’ representation is reduced. The council member should decide if they have the time and ability to continue their current duties until they take on a new office.
