I would support efforts to protect voting rights for everyone who is legally allowed to vote, and I would work to ensure that all forms of voting are available to voters. It is also important that legislation that has made it more difficult for Ohioans to vote is reversed.
Ohio needs property tax reform. Some reform measures are already being considered in the Ohio Legislature. Other methods of reform that need to be considered are extending the Homestead Exemption to disabled citizens, and lowering the age for qualification for the exemption. The state also needs to increase its share of the funding for public education to relieve some of the burden from property taxpayers.
Property tax reform will assist in lowering the cost of living, but there are other avenues to explore. The current minimum wage needs to be increased to $13 per hour, and continue to be increased based on the current rate of inflation as it currently states in the Ohio Constitution. The income eligibility requirements for state funded programs such as healthcare, childcare, and housing should be increased to include those who are "on the bubble" for receiving those services.
Ohio must fund its public school districts in a fair and constitutional manner by requiring the state government to rely less on property tax revenue and levies for public education funding. It is necessary that all students feel welcome in the public school system, regardless of their gender, religion, ethnicity, immigration status, etc. This can be accomplished by rescinding legislation that requires school districts to make time for religious education, tying the hands of educators by not being a safe person for a student to confide in without fear of calling the student's parent or guardian, and ensuring that the curriculum taught in the classroom is accurate and free of bias. Higher education must have the freedom to serve all of its students without fear of funding reductions.
I will be willing to listen to all legislators, no matter which political party they belong to. We need to get back to realizing that everyone can contribute something for a positive outcome. I will also vote for what is best for my district, not how my party thinks I should vote. I am there to represent my constituents, not my party. Doing this will allow for more open dialogue between legislators from different parties, and the need to work together for the common good. This isn't something that will happen quickly; hyperpartisanship has developed over time, and it will take time to reverse the damage that has been done because of it.
