With so much discussion regarding potential voter fraud and election integrity whether valid or invalid claims, the idea that requiring voter registration to prove citizenship and the presentation of proper identification to cast a vote seems absurd. Never have I been able to cast a vote at my voting precinct without proper identification. I see no reason why this isn't a bipartisan slam dunk requirement and I fail to see that it prohibits or discriminates against any citizen wishing to participate in their constitutional rights!
Tax reform is complicated. We expect a certain level of services and provisions from our Government at the local, state and federal level. Locally, municipalities are running out of control by levying over-the-top property taxes, school district taxes and bond issues that are essentially discriminating against the elderly by making life unaffordable. Young families or single-parent households struggle to put food on the table while local city councils and school boards spend at will and without guard rails. We must find a common sense approach to managing taxpayer dollars, reducing our citizen's financial burden and even hardship and State lawmakers must continue to find a way, working on both sides of the aisle to find a solution.
Affordability has become a fashionable trope though for many Ohio families the American Dream is becoming more of a mirage. Housing costs are at all times highs. Interest rates continue to be high. The costs of goods at the local supermarket are high. The expense of childcare is becoming insane. Every day living expenses are not keeping up with paychecks and the struggle is real and legitimate. Ohio needs to harness the creative and ingenuity that the Buckeye state brings to the Midwest while ensuring common sense spending and tax reform from the local government and local school boards all the way to the Statehouse.
I have always believed that a Strong Ohio is a Smart Ohio. We need to re-evaluate our State educational benchmarks and strive to have every student not meet the standards of education but exceed them. While there are amazing advances in technology, AI and various related tools are reducing student needs for basic knowledge and fundamental life skills. Academic proficiency is perhaps the lowest in my lifetime and Ohio needs to figure out a way to rebuild, retool and redesign education that ensures broad-range learning while at the same time stimulating creativity and ingenuity. We need to develop a stronger base of qualified and quality teachers and use school choice(vouchers) to make school districts statewide focus on teaching every child to his/her maximum potential.
If I had a magic pill it would be solved. In my very own backyard, if you don't agree with the majority you are called every name in the book. Hatred or disdain for the President of the United States has trickled down to City Hall, School Boards, next door neighbors and beyond. Rather than learning issues and becoming educated on what the facts on both sides are, too many people are getting "news" from social media outlets, Hollywood, hired actors promoting ideas and not lastly biased news services. Far too many people take these sources as the undeniable truths and that fuels discord and animosity. Ultimately, we are back on the topic of education or the lack thereof. From Main Street to the Capitol, there needs to be respectful, open civil discussion and debate.
