Depending on your party affiliation, each state requires different amounts of signatures in order to appear on the ballot, even for the same seat (EX. In a mayor’s race, a Democrat might need 50 signatures, a Republican 25, and an independent 1,000). All states should require the same number of signatures for every candidate in a race, regardless of party. Ranked choice voting decreases partisanship in primaries and gives voters a stronger say over who becomes their elected leader, and therefore, should be enacted across all elections. Finally, I will work each day to overturn Citizens United. This will be difficult due to the power the Supreme Court has to keep it in place. If these policies were to change, however, our elections and our leaders would change for the better.
This is a defining question of our time for elected leaders. There are many solutions for affordability: only use public dollars for public schools to save families money, expand renewable energy for lower costs, and fund local transit. Cars cost on average $11,000 per year after all expenses are tallied. A transit system, built to be as fast as a car, can cost $95/month in OH District 11.
Chiefly, we need leaders who negotiate with businesses like labor leaders. Businesses who pay their workers living wages should pay lower taxes, while businesses who have workers rely on social supplemental programs because of their low pay, must pay higher taxes. Government should always incentivize companies by making it better for business to pay their workers well.
While major media outlets and politicians reward extremism with time & energy, the vast majority of our nation wants to work together to make this nation better for the next generation. We can reduce hyperpartisanship by cutting it out of our consumption and promote civility by simply talking with each other. Difficulty arises when people disagree on how best to achieve a better country, but by gathering together, in mediated settings where people are given time to express their own views while meeting & listening to diverse views, we can discover the path forward. Some ideas may be more effective than others. Some easier to implement. Regardless, we need them all – and the willingness to work towards our shared vision together. This is the America I envision & the one I wish to lead.
Historically, we have been over involved in foreign conflicts. I envision a balance where we can help and empower the oppressed, as well as ourselves.
We must renew USAID programs. They have done more to bring peace & prosperity than any war we have waged. Militarily, we can help oppressed peoples, like the Rohingya in Myanmar and the Uyghurs in China, without having to send Americans into harm's way. Before we enter conflicts of any kind, Congress must vote and our peoples’ voice must be heard.
We can achieve further prosperity ourselves, by slightly decreasing our ginormous military budget to bring lower healthcare costs, better-funded schools and lower infant mortality rates across our union. We can have it all – because we are the richest nation in the history of the world.
A major change required is the discourse around immigration. Major media outlets focus more on isolated instances than the truth: Immigrants spur our economy & chip away at our national debt. Immigrants are willing & able to do jobs many Americans do not want to do.
If elected, I want to end current DHS and ICE practices, as well as expedite pathways to citizenship. Currently, the process can take decades!
Immigrants who commit violent crimes, like murder and sexual assault, should not be allowed to stay in the U.S. What is often missed is how few cases like this there are. The overwhelming majority of immigrants are here to work, to learn, and live. As a grandchild of immigrants, I want to ensure the protection of the American Dream for everyone, no matter where they come from.
