Johnson County Recorder

The chief function of the recorder is to preserve public records, including deeds, mortgages, liens, leases, articles of incorporation and amendments, certificates authorizing foreign corporations to do business within the state, army and navy discharges, bankruptcy notices and other documents. The recorder receives a fee for recording instruments and certificates, which are paid to the county treasury. The recorder serves a four year term.

At this time one of the most challenging aspects is preventing Property Fraud. A fraudulent recording can cause a multitude of problems for the home owner. Costing money, time and frustration.
My 29 years of experience with Johnson County has prepared me for all aspects of serving as County Recorder. I was employed in the Johnson County Auditor’s Office for 22 years prior to becoming Chief Deputy for the Recorder’s Office. During my time in the Auditor’s Office, I served in multiple roles. I worked in financial, benefits, and also managed grants, which gave me a strong understanding of county operations and financial processes. For the past seven years, I have served in a leadership role as Chief Deputy, managing staff and overseeing daily operations. This experience has given me hands-on knowledge in all areas of the Recorder’s Office and the leadership skills necessary to serve the public effectively as County Recorder.
I would continue maintaining strict procedures for reviewing and recording documents. This ensures accuracy and compliance with state laws. Security is essential. I will continue our current secure digital system, backing up all public records to protect from loss or damage. Accessibility is very important. I will continue maintaining a user-friendly system, available to the public as well as businesses and title companies for searching online and in the office. I will ensure that the staff are trained to assist in person and by phone providing assistance to all.
I will focus on strong procedures, staff training, and effective use of technology. Clear guidelines and consistent review of the documents will help ensure accuracy. Training is very important. I would make sure the staff receives ongoing training so they can stay current with the state requirements for recording and indexing documents.
Our office is fortunate to already have a digital records management system in place. I will continue to look for ways to improve efficiency and expand accessibility to additional services. I will always support maintaining and enhancing the recordkeeping system so documents can be recorded, stored and searched quickly and accurately. Protecting sensitive information is a priority. I will provide the most up-to-date secure, public records system available.
