Johnson County Auditor
The auditor serves many roles including as secretary to the board of county commissioners and the clerk to the county council. The auditor has responsibility for keeping accounts and issuing checks for the county. As a result, the board of commissioners, the council and other officials often look to the auditor for operational assistance, information and advice. The auditor is directly responsible for preparing tax duplicates that show the value of property and taxes assessed against each taxpayer. After taxes are collected by the treasurer, the auditor distributes them to the governmental units and agencies for which they were collected. As a part of the tax function, the auditor must also prepare plats that show the ownership and assessed valuation of each parcel in each township in the county.

Please describe how your background and training have prepared you to serve as county auditor.
How would you ensure transparency, accuracy, and accountability in managing the county’s financial records and reports?
What strategies would you use to improve efficiency and oversight in processing budgets, payroll, and tax collections?
How would you approach auditing or monitoring county departments to prevent errors, waste, or misuse of public funds?
In my current roll as County Auditor, I have gained hands on experience managing county finances, maintaining detailed records, and working closely with other departments, elected officials and the public. This experience has strengthened my understanding state regulations, auditing standards, and the importance of safeguarding taxpayer dollars
First, I prioritize accuracy by maintaining strict internal controls, and following established accounting standards and state guidelines. I also insure that all financial data is carefully reviewed and verified before results are finalized.
Across all areas, oversight is strengthened by implementing strong internal controls, conducting routine reviews, and maintaining transparency with other officials and the public. I also look for opportunities to improve updated technology, staff training and ongoing evaluation of procedures.
Communication and training are very important. I work with the department heads to make sure they understand financial policies, reporting requirements, the best practices. When staff are well informed it’s significantly reduces the likelihood of mistakes.
