#2 Southwest Public Library – Proposed Tax Levy (Additional)
This measure asks voters to approve an additional 1 mill property tax levy to support current expenses for the Southwest Public Library. The levy would cost approximately $35 per $100,000 of the county auditor’s market value and would be in effect for 10 years, beginning in 2026. Funds would be used for general operating expenses of the library system.PRO:Public libraries are a source of learning materials for people of all ages. They provide access to educational resources, workforce tools, and community services that residents and businesses find beneficial. According to the library, the levy would support operations, including restoring and maintaining services that were reduced during recent financial challenges. Libraries also offer services that may be helpful for residents who may not otherwise have access to them.CON:Libraries in Ohio already receive relatively high funding per capita compared to other states. Property taxes can increase the cost of owning property and may affect property values or development. These taxes may also place a greater financial burden on some residents, including renters, who may experience higher housing costs as a result.
