Ensuring the success of each student is the most important goal we strive for. I believe this goal faces three significant threats: 1) historic enrollment decline in teacher-training programs and a steady rate of educators leaving the profession, 2) increasingly common behavioral challenges among students, and 3) catastrophic loss of funding for public schools. To address educator shortages, we must maintain competitive salaries, invest in quality mentoring programs, create local pipelines in partnership with higher education institutions, and monitor and address teacher turnover. To help make gains in behavioral/mental health, we must connect children and families with school and community supports they need. To increase resources, we must fight for full funding of public education.
Two top priorities will always be ensuring each child thrives in excellent public schools and that all district employees have what they need to flourish. A new priority for next term is enrollment management. Although Eau Claire is experiencing overall city growth, school enrollment is declining. We achieved a balanced budget yet again this year, but without strategic action, future budgets will face pressure. Effectively managing declining enrollment and under-utilized facilities is essential to ensure equitable access to space and high-impact programming for each student. We will keep core systems strong; invest in innovative programs; strengthen district-community partnerships; promote the ECASD; listen to employees and families; and use research to make the best decisions possible.
