Colonial School Board - District F

In Delaware, school board service is an unpaid position with a term of 4 years (5 years for board members elected prior to Dec 2021). School board elections are nonpartisan, and are held on the second Tuesday in May each year.Seven citizens elected by the residents of the Colonial School District serve as the Board of Education. Each board member lives in a separate election district, though all are elected at large. Terms are staggered so that normally one or two seats on the board are open each year.

School districts can be more transparent and open about the actual roles and responsibilities of school board members, perhaps holding "profile of a board member" sessions. Also, hold training or informational sessions "Thinking of Running" to allow those interested to ask questions.
I understand one of the primary drivers for consolidating the districts is cost-savings and efficiency, however, bigger does not always mean better. I would like to see more data, analysis and a detailed plan on what the experience would be like for students in this new consolidated district and how it will help us improve proficiency for many of our struggling students now not later before I can weigh-in. All three are equally important considerations.
I have spent the last 30 years leading and driving large, global teams and delivering high quality outcomes at a financial services company. I've also vigorously served my community for many years in various capacities, both support and leadership roles. Most recently the last 5 years as a Court Appointed Special Advocate, advocating for the best interest of children in DFS custody. I believe my leadership/management, analytical, problem solving and data-driven decision making skills coupled with my genuine desire to uplift my community will position me well as an effective school board member.
We have to weigh these decisions very carefully and ensure we are making the best decisions for all children. I believe in the shared values of the district to ensure we establish an equitable environment for all students and that diversity enriches the educational experience.
I believe one of the most important issues facing our district is a significant portion of our students are not proficient in math or reading. To address it we need to ensure we set bold, public goals, align budgets with literary priorities, and hold the system accountable for real improvement. It is important all our board members are trained on how to use data-driven governance to monitor achievement effectively.
I would ensure that every decision I make supports my strong commitment and shared vision to meet the needs of all students. You cannot just talk the talk, you have to walk the walk. Secondly, I would use district and state data to find and close gaps within our schools with specific targets, measures and timelines to hold leadership accountable for improvement.

I am generally not in favor of just throwing a significant number of SROs into a school as a common "reaction" to issues but it is of the utmost importance that every student feels safe to attend school and learn without disruption. There are multiple levers the schools can pull once there is a clear understanding of what the issues are. However, if outcomes prove a school warrants it, I wouldn't be opposed but not yet convinced more SROs are an effective long term solution.

I believe strong schools are built through strong partnerships between families, educators, and the community. As a parent in the Colonial School District, I stayed actively involved in my children’s education by participating in strategic planning sessions, serving on the Parent Advisory Council, and helping support the passage of three school referendums.

Through that involvement, I was later invited to serve on the district’s Financial Oversight Committee, where I gained valuable insight into how our schools operate and how critical responsible financial stewardship is.

Those experiences inspired me to run for the school board. I want to use my experience, my commitment to this community, and my passion for education to serve.
I believe any discussion about consolidating school districts must clearly benefit students, educators, parents, and the entire community. While some proposals are currently being evaluated, there are still important questions that need to be answered—particularly around the potential impact on local unions, staffing, and our school communities. Until we have clear evidence that consolidation would strengthen our schools without creating unintended harm, I do not support moving forward with consolidation at this time.
I am a parent, educator, and entrepreneur committed to the success of Colonial schools. As an involved parent, I helped pass three school referendums, participated in strategic planning sessions, served on the Parent Advisory Council, and was active in the PTA for eight years.

As an adjunct professor at Wilmington University, I guide students in preparing for their future, reinforcing my belief in strong K–12 education. Professionally, my background in engineering, marketing, and business ownership has sharpened my skills in planning, budgeting, and problem-solving.

I have learned to connect people, collaborate effectively, and bring ideas to action. I will use these skills to serve thoughtfully, responsibly, and passionately.
When the community raises concerns about curriculum topics, books, or programs, the school board’s role is to ensure these issues are addressed thoughtfully and transparently. First, it’s important that the community understands the process for adopting and reviewing curriculum and educational materials.

Before any decisions are made about removing content, we must fully understand the concerns and the potential impact on students’ learning. I would encourage early dialogue at the school level, bringing together parents, educators, and administrators to discuss the challenge and explore possible solutions.

Open communication and collaboration ensure decisions reflect both community input and student educational needs.
The single most important issue facing our district is the potential reduction of federal funding and the impact it could have on programs and resources. Reduced federal allocations increase pressure on local funding, which can strain our ability to maintain essential programs and services for students.

To address this, I would work with the board, administration, and community to carefully evaluate district priorities, ensure mandated programs continue to receive support, and strategically allocate resources to maintain quality education while protecting programs that most directly benefit students.
Ensuring equitable access for all students—including students of color, low-income students, English-language learners, and those receiving special education services—requires intentional planning and accountability. The district’s strategic plan provides a blueprint for equity, guiding how board decisions, budget allocations, and programs are aligned with these goals.

I would also prioritize consistent community engagement and transparent reporting at board meetings so families and residents can see progress. By combining strategic planning, resource alignment, and open communication, we can ensure that every student has the support and opportunities they need to succeed.

I believe the need for additional resource officers depends on the individual schools and the specific challenges they face. Decisions about safety and support should be based on data, school needs, and input from educators, parents, and the community. My focus would be on ensuring that all students have a safe learning environment while also providing the right resources and support to address the unique needs of each school.
