With SB 1 capping property tax revenue, the County Council will be faced with many new and difficult challenges. We will be forced to make tough decisions, and it will require a careful balance between maintaining the programs and services our communities rely on and ensuring we are not over burdening our tax payers. Under such pressure it might seem like short term revenue grabs are the right decisions to make. I will not support rushed decisions, especially ones that will create even bigger challenges for our communities in the future. In short, my three priorities are: protect communities, responsible budgeting and making lasting decisions.
My experience that makes me a strong candidate for County Council includes working in the Lake Central School district as a special education teacher, being an instructor in the health and wellness industry at one of the nation's leading health clubs, running a small business from my home, being an active committeewoman for my precinct organization and serving on the Schererville Park Board.
Throughout all of these roles, one thing has remained consistent: my focus on people and problem-solving. I know how to listen, advocate, and collaborate to find real solutions to meet the needs of those I serve.
Communication will be a key component during times of budget reductions. We will need to collaborate closely with department heads to find out how essential services can be run more efficiently without sacrificing quality. Speaking with residents is equally important when trying to determine what is truly needed and where we can make adjustments. Throughout this approach we must remain transparent and make data driven decisions in order to maintain the levels of service our communities deserve.
