Biographical Information

What professional and community related experience do you bring to the Winneconne Community School District board?

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction issues annual report cards to each public school district. How should the Winneconne School Board and the administration use this data?

School funding: What is the impact of state money going to voucher schools on the Winneconne Community School District? Do you think that tax bills should indicate how much residents are paying for private as well as public schools, rather than lumping this total together? How should the state legislature fund schools?

What are your goals and priorities for your possible term as a member of the Winneconne Community School Board? How will you work to advance those goals, and how will they benefit the schools and community?

My professional experience in leadership and operational management comes from running a busy Chipotle restaurant. This includes team member development, training, conflict management, problem solving, and compliance with internal and external regulations. This may not be seen as directly related experience; in reality, it allows me to understand organizational pressures, supporting staff through good governance, and respecting professional expertise. That operational experience includes working within established policies and maintaining careful oversight of budgets and resources.
The DPI annual report cards are useful in validating changes the board has put in place (are the changes effective or not) and can help determine key areas to focus on for the following years. Though some have stated that these report cards are a moving target and difficult to fully understand, I take them seriously and they are state requirements.

DPI is only one measure of school success, there are others. Another measure of success how our students do after they leave the Winneconne School District is participation in the youth apprenticeship program; preparing the students for both careers right out of school and for college should they choose that route.
Voucher schools do have a financial impact on the Winneconne Community School District, Having increased transparency with how local education tax dollars are being allocated is important so taxpayers can make informed decisions. I support tax bills clearly showing the full picture of where the funds are going. At the same time, all schools receiving public funds should be held to a strong accountability standards. The state should focus on a stable and predictable funding methods that supports student success where ever families decide to enroll.
I want to strengthen the board’s long-term effectiveness by improving processes and supporting individual member development, so the board can remain stable, productive, and unified even as members change.

By supporting individual member development, the board will be better equipped to ask stronger questions and identify root causes more quickly.

A stable and consistent board prevents teachers from being pulled in different directions as board turnover occurs.

The board will have a stronger relationship with staff and the community, helping foster conditions that promote learning.

I hold an MBA and bring 30 years of Finance and Business Administration experience to this position. I was a Finance and Business Manager for a Religious and Educational Facility Architectural Firm where I learned about the environmental needs for both students and teachers, as well as the safety requirements that come into play when designing buildings meant to facilitate proper learning environments. I was recruited for a Controller position by one of my clients that specialized in providing comprehensive educational consulting, coaching, and professional development services to K-12 Educational Providers nationwide by collaborating with school professionals, including teachers, administrators, counselors, and executive leadership teams, to develop tailored solutions that cater to the unique needs of their students and the broader school community.
Although the DPI puts much effort into determining this rating, I believe the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) standards ensure more rigorous, consistent, and accurate measurements. We want the best for our children, and we want them to achieve their greatest potential. Knowing where they truly stand and where we really need to actively focus our efforts on helping them improve their skills is very important. Therefore, I would recommend that we put more focus on learning from the NAEP standards and grow ourselves from there, which would give us a more clear assessment of where we need improvement and the ability to structure improvement plans so we can actually implement proper learning programs for all levels of learners which I feel would better accommodate the needs of every student and allow the students that are falling behind to get the help they need to catch up to their peers.
This is a difficult topic for many because you have tax payer dollars going to private school - many of which do not pay taxes because of their exemption status. I understand the frustration. Money for our children is being sent to institutions that are profiting when they are supposed to be considered non for profit. Now, the other issue we face is that these schools are not regulated the same way as our public school. So they don't have to answer for the same standards and program offerings as our public school system does. Parents have a choice. I feel when the private school option is chosen, the cost should be incurred by the family, not the tax payers. In most situations, there are grants and payment assistance available for those who need it.
As an elected official, it is my responsibility to properly budget our funds to effectively provide the resources needed for our teachers and students to reach new goals and academic milestones, while rebuilding relationships and opening communications between parents, teachers and our community. I plan to bring my strong financial background to table and work to keep our finances in order and keep the amount of additional taxes we impose on our tax payers to a minimum while being responsible stewards with their investments. I will keep open and transparent communications with our parents, teachers, and community by informing them of important details before decisions are made and allowing them to express their concerns and having quarterly community outreach sessions. I will also implement 2 parent teacher conferences instead of 1 per year, and move to standardized district testing that is consistent and a better tool for our teachers.

Winneconne is my home. I have always tried to support our community by supporting local businesses as well as being active on local committees and boards. I was the Village of Winneconne Clerk-Treasurer for 28 years. I volunteered on the Sovereign State Committee for 17 years. I am a current member of the Winneconne Historical Society. And, I also serve as a Village Trustee on the Winneconne Village Board.
The state report card is an important diagnostic tool, but it is just a small part of each child’s journey in our district. The data is used to identify achievement gaps, set academic goals, and celebrate our successes. It serves as a transparent communication tool for our families. However, the data does not quantify other important aspects of the daily life as a student. Learning is a deeply individual journey. A standardized test does not reflect the student’s ability to perform under pressure on a specific day. It does not take into consideration the daily struggles a student may be experiencing; it may not reflect their character; it may not reflect their drive to do their very best; or their creativity in art, music, or the theater. We value each child for who they are, not their score on a report card.
The impact of state funding of voucher schools has a huge impact on public school districts. Voucher schools are funded indirectly by your property taxes. An essential component of public school systems is accountability. If an institution receives taxpayer dollars, they should be held to the same transparency standard as our public schools. Taxpayers have little to no oversight or accountability on how voucher schools spend their money. In Winneconne, we are seeing a continuous shift of the tax burden away from the state and onto our local homeowners. Our district currently loses approximately $450,000 in State Aid to voucher schools, which compounds the pressure on our local budget and taxpayers. The current system is clearly struggling. While I don't claim to have a magic formula for school finance, I will be a relentless advocate for funding increases.
There are two main goals I would focus on as a school board member - we must focus on the students while presenting a unified voice. This provides the stability necessary for our staff and students to thrive. We must ensure every board members’ perspective is heard, even though we may not always agree, as we are representing the students. The best way to accomplish this is to foster a cohesive, unified Board of Education. Every decision must focus on the students: How does this improve the student experience: or help our teachers to educate the students? Everyone, all students, have a right to a basic education. We need to equip students for their roles as citizens and enable them to succeed. Therefore, it is important to have a unified voice.
