Over their two-year term, a JP is responsible for:Setting real estate, personal property and sales tax rates in the county.Determining the final budget for county departments and offices - including salaries - and appropriating funds for county expenses.Preserving the peace and order in the county, though they do not have the authority to make any offense a felony. This often takes the form of passing county laws and in some counties making planning decisions.Contract or join with any other county or city, or the federal government for a public purpose.Creating, consolidating, separating, or abandoning any elected office in the county if first approved by voters.Filling vacancies in elected county offices.Providing for any service or performance of any function related to county affairs.Many Quorum Courts also have subcommittees that JPs serve on and discuss the more nitty gritty details before an issue appears before the whole group. A Justice of the Peace in Craighead County is an elected official whose primary role is to serve as a member of the Quorum Court, which is the county’s legislative body. The Primary duties are to represent specific geographic districts with the county and meet regularly to govern county affairs.
As members of the legislative branch the JP’s are responsible for passing and adopting county ordinances and resolutions. They also appropriate fund and set the county budget determining the funding levels for county departments and services. They also have the responsibility to set the tax rate- including property and sales tax as allowed by law. They also have ability to establish the pay for county officers, officials and employees.
My experience strongly prepares me to serve as a Justice of the Peace through a career grounded in public service and community leadership. I spent 20 years working for the City of Jonesboro, where i gained firsthand knowledge of how local government operates, including budgeting, ordinances, policy development, and collaboration with elected officials and the public. This experience taught me the important of fiscal responsibility, transparency, and thoughtful decision making. I also spent six years with the East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging, a nonprofit focused on serving older adults. There i worked with state and federal programs, managed public funds, and advocating for vulnerable populations.
When i take office, my focus will be on public safety, accountability, and quality of life. I will work to improve conditions at the county jail by supporting responsible planning, adequate staffing and facilities that meet modern standards. I will advocate for better pay and retention for sheriff’s deputies, recognizing the risks they take and the vital role they play in keeping our community safe. I also believe quality of life matters, and i will support investments in parks and recreation, along with effective mosquito control, to make our neighborhoods healthier, safer, and more enjoyable for families of all ages
