Over their two-year term, a JP is responsible for:Setting real estate, personal property and sales tax rates in the county.Determining the final budget for county departments and offices - including salaries - and appropriating funds for county expenses.Preserving the peace and order in the county, though they do not have the authority to make any offense a felony. This often takes the form of passing county laws and in some counties making planning decisions.Contract or join with any other county or city, or the federal government for a public purpose.Creating, consolidating, separating, or abandoning any elected office in the county if first approved by voters.Filling vacancies in elected county offices.Providing for any service or performance of any function related to county affairs.Many Quorum Courts also have subcommittees that JPs serve on and discuss the more nitty gritty details before an issue appears before the whole group. The duties of the office of Desha County Justice of the Peace are to serve on the quorum court voting on ordinances and resolutions. These duties are very important because county funding is allocated for county roads, emergency services, libraries, county jails, community programs and other important matters.
I am the executive director of Alex Foundation, an award-winning nonprofit that introduces students to architecture. Prior to Alex Foundation, I was chief operating officer for an educational nonprofit with operations in Arkansas, Mississippi, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
I established Friends of John H. Johnson Museum and worked with Arkansas legislators during the 92nd General Assembly to draft the language for the John H. Johnson Day bill.
I previously worked at the United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.
A graduate of Dermott High School, I received my BA from UA Little Rock and my MA from Webster University.
These experiences, coupled with my heart for service, qualifies me for Justice of the Peace.
I met with the current Desha County Judge, who invited me to share my plans when I take office. I expressed my interest in accessing funding for schools, students, and educators. I plan to accomplish this, with support, through the Desha County Quorum Court process.
