Hamilton County Coroner

The Hamilton County Coroner is an elected official responsible for investigating sudden, suspicious, or unnatural deaths to determine the cause and manner of death. The office works closely with law enforcement and pathologists to identify the deceased, notify next of kin, and sign death certificates, serving the community with compassion. Key Responsibilities:Death Investigations: Conducting investigations at scenes of death (homicides, suicides, accidents, natural) to determine cause and manner.Case Management: Authorizing and arranging autopsies when necessary, identifying the deceased, and issuing death certificates.Family Assistance: Notifying next of kin and handling family interactions with dignity.Legal Compliance: Adhering to Indiana Code 32-2-14 regarding the handling of bodies and evidence.Administrative Duties: Submitting required reports and working alongside law enforcement officials. Key Qualifications & Requirements:Must be an elector and resident of Hamilton County, Indiana.While not required to be a doctor, the coroner works with forensic pathologists and skilled deputies who may hold certifications from the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators.Estimated Current Coroner Salary: $96,341.90
