Lake Worth Beach Charter Amendment 5. Repeal of Defunct Police and Fire Sections

Ballot LanguageIn recognizing that the City no longer has a City Police or Fire Department and to eliminate any confusion, shall Article IV, Section 10 of the City of Lake Worth Beach Charter (Police and Fire Departments) be repealed?SynopsisDriven by the desire for cost savings and perceived improvements in public safety, the City contracted with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to provide law enforcement services in the City in 2008, following a City Commission vote to merge its Police Department with PBSO. The City has renewed or amended its agreement with PBSO multiple times. The following year, the City dissolved its independent Fire Department by merging with Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue, making it the largest municipal fire department absorbed by the county at that time. The department began in 1913 with volunteers. The Charter would be amended to remove this section as the city no longer has its own police or fire departmentYes - For the Measure Means:If voters accept the ballot measure, the City Charter will be amended to remove sections about the Police Department and Fire Department. No - Against the Measure Means:If voters accept the ballot measure, the City Charter section that defines the Police Department and Fire Department will remain in the document even though Lake Worth Beach now gets those services from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue.
