Boca Raton Bond Measure - Boca Raton Police Department Headquarters and Public Safety Facilities Project
Ballot LanguageShall the City issue general obligation bonds, in one or more series, to finance the construction and equipping of a new police department headquarters, and related public safety support facilities located within the City in the principal amount not to exceed $175,000,000, bearing interest at not exceeding the legal rate, maturing not later than 30 years from the date of issuance, and payable from ad valorem taxes levied on all taxable property in the City?SynopsisBoca Raton’s current Police Department headquarters, at 100 N.W. Boca Raton Blvd., was built nearly 40 years ago. It is not hurricane-rated, lacks adequate space for current staff and equipment, has limited space for expansion and is not built to current standards. A 2007 space needs study identified options for an improved and expanded headquarters, which was added to the City’s Capital Improvement Program. The new headquarters is proposed for a City-owned site on Spanish River Boulevard, to the east of the Spanish River Library. If approved, it will be designed to address public safety service demands for the next 30 years; provide a centralized location for police officers and the public as well as access to all areas of the City; be built to current standards, including hurricane/storm resiliency; and consolidate services currently operating in separate locations. The referendum asks voters to authorize the issuance of General Obligation Bonds of up to $175 million to finance the construction of a new police headquarters and supporting public safety facilities. The projected average property tax impact is 0.2605 mills, or about $123.74 per year for 30 years. For a home with a $600,000 assessed valuation, the property tax impact would be $156.30 annually, not including a discount for a homestead exemption. For Bonds Means:The City will issue the bonds for a new Police Department Headquarters, and the project will be constructed.Against Bonds Means:The City cannot issue the bonds for a new Police Department Headquarters, and the project will not move forward.
