Over their two-year term, a JP is responsible for:Setting real estate, personal property and sales tax rates in the county.Determining the final budget for county departments and offices - including salaries - and appropriating funds for county expenses.Preserving the peace and order in the county, though they do not have the authority to make any offense a felony. This often takes the form of passing county laws and in some counties making planning decisions.Contract or join with any other county or city, or the federal government for a public purpose.Creating, consolidating, separating, or abandoning any elected office in the county if first approved by voters.Filling vacancies in elected county offices.Providing for any service or performance of any function related to county affairs.Many Quorum Courts also have subcommittees that JPs serve on and discuss the more nitty gritty details before an issue appears before the whole group. A Justice of the Peace is part of the Quorum Court, which is the county’s legislative body. A JP's function is to develop the county's budget & finances, draft local ordinances & legislation, set tax rates (millage, sales tax, etc.) and to help determine employee compensation.
I have served my community as a Law Enforcement Officer/First Responder for over two decades. I believe my experience has given me the ability to engage and connect with members of the Hot Springs/Garland County community. Likewise, I've been able to see the challenges that my district faces, first-hand. I've volunteered on numerous boards in an attempt to serve my community and believe that serving as a Justice of the Peace will allow to extend my record of service to the citizens.
My goal is to bring in an era of cooperation among the Quorum Court membership. I don't think that hyper-partisanship serves a real purpose in county government. There a issues that the community faces together, whether there's a D or an R beside your name and it's my belief that "together" is the best way to solve them. Empty gestures and resolutions regarding national issues or honoring controversial national figures only serve to further divide the citizens, rather than fostering a sense of unity and common goal achievement. I plan to be a JP for everyone, not just those I the same party and I want to bring that spirit to the Quorum Court.
