Fitchburg has made earnest strides, yet progress still limps behind need, as it does in much of the county. We must expand missing-middle housing, strengthen partnerships with nonprofit developers, continue to provide assistance for first time home buyers, streamline approvals, and align zoning with reality. Development must be intentional while respecting the needs of current residents and the constraints of services and infrastructure. A city that cannot house its workers, elders, and young families will quickly find itself replaced by those which do.
Fitchburg should balance development through clear, enforceable planning: traffic impact studies tied to mitigation funding, design standards that protect historic areas, buffer requirements for wetlands and natural spaces, and coordination between police, fire, and planning before approvals. Growth should be prioritized in transit-served corridors, not sprawl. Development must serve community standards, not simply market demand or the highest bidders. When there is unresolvable conflict, environmental protection and human-centered priorities must take precedence.
My constituents prioritize affordable housing, public safety, environmental stewardship, mobility, and accountable governance. I would advance missing-middle housing, expand alternative response models for public safety, protect green space through smart land use and prioritization of natural area access, invest in traffic calming and expanded transit access, and insist on transparent, data-driven council decisions with regular community engagement.
