The role of a Sheriff has many responsibilities. He serves as both the leader and protector of the people under his command. A sheriff must take charge, foster cooperation, and actively engage with other law enforcement agencies within his jurisdiction to ensure public safety and trust with the community. He also oversees the operations of the detention center and maintain clear, consistent communication with the courts. The Sheriff should engage with the community. He or a designee should attend council meetings, meet with local mayors, and meet with the public not only when incidents happen but when times are good as well.
I have been in law enforcement for over 24 years. I have worked in most of the divisions at the sheriff's office. I have been a Sergeant in the jail, a Seargeant on patrol, and my last assignment I was the Lieutenant of the jail. I honorably volunteered for Honor Guard for over 16 years and was on Search and Rescue. I was on the Sebastian County SWAT Team for 13 years where I served as an Assistant Team Leader for 4 years and the Team Leader for 3 years. I have attended numerous local leadership classes as well as School of Law Enforcement Supervision and Executive Development Course, both hosted by the Criminal Justice Institute. I am currently the Police Chief in Mansfield, AR, which comes with a whole different outlook on policing.
In the first week or 2, I will meet with all divisions. One of the first things EVERYONE will do is re-commit to our Code of Ethics. Everyone will have homework prior to this meeting. I want to know what the peoples career goals are. What their training goals are, and I want to know what they are doing to achieve those goals. I do not believe in the "good ol boy" system. If you want it, come get it. Work for it.
I also want to know about their families. I don't want them to just be a name. I want to invest in them.
We will communicate. Within the organization, within the community, and with other law enforcement agencies. The administration will be like minded men and women who want to lead by inspiration, not intimidation.
