Over their four-year term, a county sheriff is responsible for:Serving as county tax collector in counties where a separate position doesn't exist.Executing court summons, enforcing judgments, orders, injunctions, garnishments, serving evictions, and making arrests on warrants issued by the courts.Preserving the peace, preventing/detecting/investigating criminal activity, control of crowds at public events, control of traffic at accidents, protecting property during emergencies. Custody of the county jail and the people incarcerated within it. This includes providing food and health care to people in jail as they wait for bond or the outcome of their court case. I am seeking the office of County Sheriff for Fulton County, AR. In short the duties of the office and the Department are to Protect and Serve. Far to long the citizens of Fulton County have dealt with the issues, lack of standards, common decency, dignity, and respect the Sheriff's department has neglected to display or have in general. Bottomline, they have lost faith in the department as a whole and who can blame them. Having peeked behind the curtain now, I have seen how lacking the department is and heard it first hand from some of the deputies working there currently. I was raised old fashioned, raised to serve my fellow man and woman. I did just that for 21 years in the Army, but I'm not done serving just yet.
As previously stated, I was raised old fashioned right here in Fulton, I graduated Salem High in 1994 and quickly departed to serve in the US Army for the next two decades. During which time i worked with numerous Federal Agencies, both law enforcement and judicial branches. I freely admit, I do not have the "local law enforcement" experience common found in local home grown sheriff candidates, but I do not see that as a negative. In fact, just the opposite. I need my deputies to have the local experience, but when they run into problems they cannot solve at their level, that's where I come in as the Sheriff and bring bigger, stronger assets to bare to help them with whatever they are facing. I addition to the skills and training I possess.
Simple, I will have to build back a stronger foundation in my deputies. Bring them back to the standards they know and came out of the academy with. Require them to get back to the heart of law enforcement and community service to which they took an oath to uphold. There will be a full service record review of the entire deputy core and most likely there will be some officers let go and new officers brought in. I must restore the community's faith n the department which will not happen over night, but it starts from within and projects outward. And it will start with me being the example to emulate day in and day out; little thing like being to work on time, pride in the uniform, proper physical standards, continuing education, and more.
