The Justice of the Peace has original jurisdiction in Class C misdemeanor criminal cases and traffic cases. They also preside over landlord-tenant disputes, including eviction matters, small claims disputes where the amount in dispute is less than $20,000, and debt claims. Justices of the peace serve in the capacity of a committing magistrate, with the authority to issue warrants for the arrest of persons charged with the commission of felony or misdemeanor offenses. They can also hear truancy cases, administrative cases to revoke drivers licenses and perform marriage ceremonies.

I have always been an advocate for the members of my community, including students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Serving others has been at the center of my public life. Because the Justice of the Peace court is often referred to as the “people’s court,” it offers an opportunity to continue that service by working directly with residents, listening to their concerns, and ensuring that everyone is treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.
Seven years ago, I decided to seek this office to continue my 33 years of public service. I have 14 years with local, council, and state PTAs; nearly 15 years on the CCISD Board of Trustees; and four years as a Corpus Christi City Council member. I have volunteered extensively in CCISD and served as Director of Parent Leadership for Magnet Schools of Texas, completed four terms on the Texas School Safety Center Board at Governor Perry’s request, and was one of two parents in Texas appointed to Attorney General John Cornyn's School Violence Prevention Task Force. These experiences taught me to listen carefully, act impartially, and apply the law fairly; qualities I will continue to bring as current Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1, Place 3.
The primary concern I hear from residents is the inconsistent availability of Justice of the Peace offices in Nueces County. Constituents have expressed frustration when posted office hours are not consistently followed. My response is to prioritize reliability, accountability, and public access by ensuring the office operates as scheduled and serves the public consistently and professionally, and being transparent with any changes.
Since being elected, my top priorities are maintaining operational efficiency, ensuring filings are completed on time, and supporting a punctual, professional office. I will continue offering Zoom hearings to make my court more accessible. Additionally, my court was the only one in our precinct to pilot the E-File system, allowing constituents to submit cases online. I am committed to seeing this implemented precinct-wide, which will save time for residents.
