There are several big threats to the City of Belle Glade, but the two most important that need immediate attention are the need for more jobs opportunities, and affordable housing. The City of Belle Glade must look for many opportunities to bring businesses and jobs to our citizens. Affordable housing is also important and is an issue everywhere in the country, Belle Glade needs more affordable housing for all economic levels.
The citizens of Belle Glade are its greatest strengths because when we unite and fight for what we need and want to see in our city, we can bring prosperity to the majority of the citizens. We must look for every opportunity to bring wealth to our city, including showcasing our labor pools, potential for business growth and development, and improved education programs.
Unfortunately, taxes are a big part of raising money or funds for city projects and maintenance and any city government that says they can provide for these is not being honest. The savings must come from cutting wasteful and unnecessary spending in city hall and spending wisely on important projects that will improve the city for all not just a few. One such area is in the salaries of city officials that does not reflect the revenue received, we have a city hall official whose salary is more than most cities. This saving alone would help with maintenance and some repairs in the city.
Opportunities exist for budget savings are in the areas of extreme salaries, perks, and budget items that could be less.
The Florida’s Homeless Law prohibits sleeping or camping in public areas of the city like parks, sidewalks, or city buildings. The City of Belle Glade has a problem with homelessness in certain areas of the city. These areas have been identified but very little has been done to clean them up. This is an important issue that must be addressed with actions not just promises. Alternative temporary and permanent housing must be created to get homeless off the streets.
