As a graduate of Texas A&M, a UT assistant instructor, and as a long-time resident of the area, I have seen how decisions of the Legislature affect ordinary people (and not always in a positive way).
One step will be to curtail the enormous tax breaks that have been given to data centers and other corporate projects. That will provide additional revenue to local school districts and help ensure that education is properly funded.
Texas has been a leader in energy for a long time. We need to preserve our lead with aggressive expansion of renewable energy alongside oil and gas. Sunlight and wind power will be key resources in the years ahead, and since Texas has been blessed with both we should make full use of them.
The most immediate step is to expand Medicaid, which will make medical care more accessible and affordable for over a million hard-working Texans.
I believe we need a nonpartisan redistricting commission that will draw lines in a fair, non-political manner and assure representation for everyone. Ordinary Texans should be made members of that commission, and career politicians should be excluded.
