Occupation
Judge
I have a well-rounded background in criminal law. In my 15 year legal career I have worked in Harris County as a prosecutor, public defender, staff attorney to 20 county court at law judges & a judge. Serving in these various roles has lent itself to the fair & balanced approach I take on the bench & the administrative decisions that I make.
I am deeply devoted to public service, public safety & following the law. My career is proof of my dedication to the betterment of the Harris County Criminal Justice system & reducing recidivism. I maintain one of the lowest county criminal dockets by encouraging efficient resolution of cases. I also prioritize community outreach because building a bridge between the courts & the community is critical.
(1) Addressing misinformation about criminal law & the justice system. Judges abide by ethical canons that prevent us from commenting on decisions or pending cases. This can leave an impression that judges are not doing their jobs. I use Zoom daily so the public can watch Court 12 & learn more about the law & watch how tough decisions are made daiIy. I speak to community groups about the law so they stay informed & plan to grow the number & types of groups to which I offer legal education.
(2) Expanding mental health court to better treat the root issues for those struggling with their condition. We must partner with more wrap-around service providers to ensure long-term treatment & housing options to keep people & communities safe.
