Exclusive original jurisdiction over misdemeanors where the fine allowed exceeds $500 or confinement in the county jail does not exceed one year. Decisions from the municipal and justice of the peace courts may be appealed to county criminal courts at law. 4-year term.

I bring more than 25 years of experience in criminal law. Before being elected, I handled over 3,500 cases in Harris County as an Assistant Public Defender and was Fair Defense Act–certified to accept both felony and misdemeanor cases. As presiding judge, I reduced the court docket from more than 2,500 cases to fewer than 1,000 through efficient case management and leadership.

Before practicing law, I spent over five years in higher education administration, supervising hundreds of employees. I have worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds and trained staff in diversity, bias awareness, and leadership development. These experiences have strengthened my communication skills and enhanced my ability to work effectively with all par

My top priority has been exposing young offenders to meaningful career pathways. Recidivism decreases when individuals have stable employment and income.I have incorporated career counseling and trade-skills assessments into probation conditions, recognizing that many people are unaware of well-paying careers that do not require extensive education. I encourage participation in basic trade-skills programs that lead directly to real job opportunities. My second focus is addressing family violence. Domestic abuse places a serious emotional and social burden on families and consumes significant law-enforcement resources. Without intervention, the cycle continues. I require offenders to participate in proven programs that promote accountability
