I have an eclectic set of experiences that help me take on challenges that could use a creative solutions. For example, I had a work study job at an architectural firm and a job at a company in the building trades that taught me about architecture, engineering, and the public bidding process. I have two degrees from Grand Valley State University. One in Art and Design where I learned how to take a problem and address it from many points of view. It also developed my appreciation for the beauty in the spaces we live. My second degree is in Computer Science. I learned about technology and developed a love of making tools that help people. I currently work at a marketing firm building website for clients. Much of that work is about finding ways to present complex information to users in a clear and concise way. I can see ways that these skills could help me as a commissioner.
One of the biggest issues in Hudsonville is growth. Areas in and around the city are growing and we need to focus it, nurture it and make sure the long term future of the community is considered. We don't want to grow too fast or in ways that harm the city and community.
I want to be people focused, so I would like to try to create opportunities for dialogue with the community. There could be tension between the desire or resistance for growth and an open dialogue between the city and the community will facilitate understanding. I have some ideas like creating a public todo list that shows the projects and areas of focus the city is working on. Another idea is having commissioner meet and greets for the community to talk more directly with the commissioners. I know communication is important and thinking of ways to increase it in both directions will be key.
