By considering opinions and input from all persons having an interest in the well-being of Harbor Springs. While full-time residents and voters are the stewards of the city, those who are part-time residents and who have a Harbor Springs mailing address should be heard. I have experience working in volunteer positions, including time served on the boards of Northmen Den Youth Pantries and Little Traverse Sailors and, most importantly, 4 years on the Harbor Springs Area Sewage Disposal Authority. I believe strongly in fiscal responsibility and would like to see the city start thinking about the need to save for future infrastructure projects. I will approach decision-making in a thoughtful and open-minded manner and want to be transparent about how I come to those decisions.
With a certain dispassion, I hope. Which is not to say that I don't feel strongly about the issues, but reactionary and emotionally-charged decisions will not serve the citizens of Harbor Springs well, nor will the spreading of misinformation or engaging in divisive name-calling. I will look at the facts, consider the opinions of both the citizens and the experts, and make decisions based on what is best of the city as a whole.
By talking to them as much as possible! I think polls and questionnaires are great tools but nothing beats getting out and talking to people. In fact, if elected my goal is to meet every registered voter in the city at least once. A big task but not so impossible in a city the size of Harbor Springs. We are all neighbors and we should be able to talk to each other and exchange ideas even if we don't always see eye-to-eye. How we speak to each other is often as important as what we say.

I have served on the Harbor Springs City Council for the last two years. In doing so, I have gained valuable knowledge of the City's processes and procedures, finances and responsibilities. I have background in the current issues facing the city and a solid understanding of meeting protocols. I have lived in Harbor Springs for 14 years, and in Northern Michigan for 38 years, so I am familiar with the issues facing people living in the area.
I was a CPA for 40 years, retiring as CFO of Walstrom Marine.
I always endeavor to obtain all of the facts about an issue, and listen to understand citizens' concerns about that issue. When dealing with a new matter, I gather all the information I can from City Staff before any scheduled meetings. I sometimes communicate with other members of various boards to understand their concerns. I often review City documents and re-listen to past city board/commission meetings. I believe in being respectful of everyone, and I work very hard to understand each person's perspective. I think all City stakeholders' interests have to be considered when making decisions at the Council level.
I will continue to be visible in the community by patronizing local businesses and attending local events. I read the local newspaper and follow current statewide events for relevance to our community. I will establish a regular meeting time/place for constituents to sit down with me and discuss questions and issues in the City.

I served on City Council for 4 years and am current on today's issues. I am an excellent listener and team member. I understand what is included in the job of a Councilperson. Making the best decisions for the City of Harbor Springs, being mindful of the common good, making policies and overseeing the budget of the city are the important parts of this job. Personal agendas and granting the requests of special interest groups should never be an issue on the Council.
The Council should address the issues facing our city through the policies they put in place and through the budgeting process. It is important to have a complete understanding of the big picture when making decisions that affect our city.
I am very active in our city and strive to make myself easily accessible to my constituents. I always welcome constituents to use my contact information to reach out with any questions or concerns. I stay current by attending many city meetings, reading the newspaper and having contact with the people in our city that have knowledge about current activities. I frequently have conversations with my constituents to get their thoughts and opinions on city business.
