I have been listening to the community for quite some time now and being a parent myself with a child still in elementary school at Whitehall, one of the significant challenges that we face is the influx of students and we need to increase the teaching staff. The only way to propose this and address this challenge is to work together with the other school board members and superintendent to figure out the best plan to get this very important challenge resolved.
My priorities are to eliminate the toxic positivity. We need to quit ignoring the problems by pretending everything is fine. We are overcrowded in the schools and we need more teaching staff for the influx of students. This means more teachers and more paraprofessionals. I would also like to see more focus on the mental health of our staff and our students. Bring SEL in the class culture, not a stand alone “lesson”. Another priority would be to keep our facilities, not only professional, but welcoming. Keeping well maintained facilities (school buildings/athletic fields) reflects positively on our entire school district and helps ensure a productive, welcoming, safe space for all students, staff, and visitors.
My role and key responsibilities are to be a voice for not only our administrative staff, our teaching staff, our students, and parents and guardians of our students. I feel I’m the best candidate to fulfill this role because I listen. I truly care about Whitehall City Schools. I would also consider myself a leader and not a follower. There will be tough decisions that need to be made, and I will ensure that I research every angle of that decision prior to me giving my vote and I will do my best to do what’s right for all of the staff, students, and parents/guardians.
To get Whitehall City Schools staff, students, and parents/guardians engaged you have to make it a point to ensure that you are listening and that you’re paying close attention to what is going on within the schools/administration building. This may also mean reaching out. I have been doing this as I have for quite some time and I will definitely continue to do this and bring issues or positive feedback to the rest of my fellow school board members so that we can work together on them.
