Occupation Prairie Township Trustee/Retired
Education B.A. Political Science, Winona State University, Winona MN
Qualifications for Office Retired 43 years with the City of Columbus Development, Human Services and Recreation and Parks (Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging) Four years as Prairie Township Trustee. Co-owner Iacovetta Properties commercial real estate investor.
The cost of water continues to be the most pressing item residents face. Franklin County continues to charge more than Columbus for the same water as other communities. Trustees and staff have continued to monitor and encourage discussions between Columbus and the County for the City to assume responsibility for water in our area. Development pressure and the need to provide safe decent and affordable housing have increased in the area. The closure and hopeful redevelopment of Galloway Village will increase the number of units available. Prairie Township has been actively involved on Bdart to review the Darby Accord document after 20 years. The review will identify areas for development, conservation and pubic use.
Replacement of aging Fire equipment is a top priority. The township has begun the process of replacing 20+ year old equipment with a new medic unit using Federal funding and ordered a second medic and engine unit with Fire Capital funds. We are currently seeking federal and state funding for a new ladder unit. The cost of these units is increasing each year that we wait and the build time can be months or years. The use of Fire Capital funds approved by the voters and as many grants we can receive are currently the best funding sources.
As development increases in the area, we need to concentrate on maintaining development on the urban fringe. Specifically the area east of the Hellbranch in order to be able to utilize existing infrastructure and reduce costs. In addition, incentives must be developed to provide opportunities for developers to redevelop abandoned, vacant and underutilized parcels with existing infrastructure that includes access to transportation, jobs and medical care. A balance needs to be achieved between maintaining our natural spaces and providing for the needs of our residents.
Resident engagement is critical to the decision making process. The board has developed a process of holding special (public) meetings to allow the board and staff to discuss rule making, park development and other items when we need resident input outside of normal board meetings. These open meetings allow staff and the board to review items, comment and then send it back for further review. These meetings are then followed up with public input meetings to get further feedback prior to final review and then voting. It's not uncommon for residents to see something from a different perspective.

Housing and public safety are the most significant issues facing central Ohio. I understand the need for housing in Prairie Township. We must have a balance of green space with development. We are currently working with all of the members of the Darby Accord to preserve the Big Darby Creek along with its tributaries, understanding that there will be growth in Prairie Township. Regarding public safety, during my current term as Trustee, we have increased the contracted hours for Frankin County Deputies to serve our community. We have added a successful Flock camera system to aid deputies and there is now a dedicated non-emergency phone number dedicated to our residence.
I would like to add our sixth park and continue building the next phases of the Prairie Township Sports Complex. Prairie Township recently updated the playground equipment at our five parks. We would like to build a new park on township property located at Dellinger Road and Hubbard Road. There is not a park in this area. I would like to continue adding opportunities for residence at the sports complex, pickleball courts would be an example of possible new facilities. Prairie Township will continue to apply for grants to fund these initiatives. The Trustees and staff work closely with our state and federal representatives seeking help to fund our projects. Over the past four years we have successfully received over five million dollars in g
Unlike other local jurisdictions, Prairie Township updates the Zoning Code as needed to meet the current demands in our area. I am engaged with our Zoning Department and legal counsel to eliminate the “grey areas” in the code. The code has been updated twice in the last three years. I understand the need for infrastructure to develop areas in the township that are lacking items like water and sanitary. I will continue to work with Columbus and the County Commissioners to get the utilities extended to Prairie Township. We were recently successful having water and sanitary lines extended to the new development on Galloway Road next to the Sports complex.
My cell phone number and email address are listed on the Prairie Township website. I take calls all hours of the day regarding questions or complaints. The agendas for the Trustees’ meetings are posted on the website on the Friday before the regularly scheduled Wednesday meeting. Residence are always welcome to call me if they have any questions regarding items to be voted on at the Trustees’ meetings.
I believe that I strive to be transparent with the township constituents. The Township will host Open House meetings in the evening so a majority of the residence can attend. We will host multiple meetings to discuss drafts of the same topic as it progresses through final adoption. Recently there was an Open House meeting to discuss Prairie Township converting to a single trash hauler. Based on the feedback at that meeting, I proposed that we do not move forward with this and the other Trustees agreed.
