While I am currently finishing my second four-year term on Obetz City Council, I have served in multiple capacities as a public employee for the past 16 years. Prior to my election to council, I began my involvement in Obetz by serving for two years on the Planning and Zoning Commission. I have also worked in the Data Center at South Western City Schools for all 16 of those years.
The top concern for Obetz at the moment is the budget. We need to move to ensure that the 2026 budget is examined very closely for any reasonable opportunities for savings. This includes both controlling expenditures, as well as ensuring that we work to keep as many programs as possible fiscally viable.
The other current challenge for the city is to continue momentum and growth for our large mixed-use project, Buckstone. Buckstone has the potential to be a direct benefit to our residents by providing many much-needed amenities, but also the controlled growth to expand our city's revenue base.
Currently in Obetz, the two largest projects that we are looking to get further off the ground are the mixed-use Buckstone project across from Hamilton Township High School, and the former site of the Columbus Fair Auto Auction next to I-270 and Alum Creek Dr. Buckstone has a unique tax structure to aid in financing that project. The city should continue pursuing commercial interests to assist with the I-270 property.
We should continue working to interconnect all neighborhoods of Obetz. When any new housing project comes to Obetz, ensure that the builder works to connect into our current sidewalks and walking paths, and we also continue to apply for grants from the state or other government organizations to ensure safe walking routes.
Over the past decade, Obetz has worked with housing and apartment developers to bring many new housing options to the city. There are several more on the near horizon working their way through Planning and Zoning and Council approvals. While we must ensure that this growth continues at a responsible pace, it is important that our next generation has the ability to come back to the community that they grew up in and love.
This all starts before the election even happens. Getting out in the community with door-to-door campaigning is a great way to engage with the community and hear their concerns. This is something that I've had the opportunity to do in past elections, and intend to do with this election as well. Once in elected office, encouraging involvement and attendance at public meetings is a great way to have engaging two-way dialogue with community members. Finally, community members are always welcome to reach out via email or social media to make their concerns heard with the city and its officials.
This is the perfect example of where the public forum comes into play. When we can see each other in person to hold meaningful conversations, we can often come to meaningful decisions. Public meetings typically provide these forums, where the city can help mediate and elaborate on any current issues of concern. Some residents are unable to come to these meetings, so they should be sure to reach out ahead of time and make their opinions known. As a city all sides can then be taken into account, and all parties can hopefully come to a reasonable resolution.
