Our economy, our quality of life, and the health of our communities depend on clean water. Southold Town has done a fantastic job of preserving and protecting our water quality through supporting policies like limiting the hardening of our shorelines, preserving open space to recharge our aquifer, supporting a marine pump-out service, and working with Suffolk County to encourage the use of Innovative Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment systems via grant programs. Our ecological challenges will continue to grow, and now is the time to stay ahead of them. Protecting our water is not just good policy - it is the single most important investment we can make in our future.
As someone born and raised here, I’ve had the unique perspective of watching the North Fork evolve demographically, ecologically, and economically. Preserving the natural beauty of our Town is essential but, equally as important, is protecting its working-class community. This means ensuring that we codify and enforce thoughtful design standards, limit the size of new builds, continue the preservation of agricultural land, and that we prioritize small businesses and small entrepreneurs over large outside investors.
I believe Southold Town should pursue the designation of a “Pro Housing Community” under New York State. This designation doesn’t raise taxes, cede zoning authority, or weaken environmental protections; it allows us access to millions in funding that can be used to gather data and gain access to experts who can help us tackle this complex issue. In addition, we should strengthen and update our short-term rental legislation to ensure it is enforceable while also capping the number of Airbnbs and VRBOs in each hamlet to help return homes to the year-round housing market. We also should support community housing and expand our Community Housing Overlay so affordable housing can be built in the shoulder areas outside of existing HALO zones.
We here in Southold Town are on the front lines of climate change. More extreme storms and flooding as well as sea level rise are of grave concern - and this is also not an issue we can tackle alone. This is an opportunity for Southold Town to collaborate with engineers and experts from Suffolk County, New York State, and even federal entities like the NOAA as we navigate the need for shoreline softening, coastal retreat, and the processes of raising critical roads like that of County Rt. 48 by Southold Town Beach.
