I have served on the City Commission for ten years, six as Mayor Pro-Tem and two years as Mayor. I am running for Mayor again because I love this City and think I am the best qualified person to bring us into the next two years of finishing the work we started as a community on the first Strategic Plan in a generation. I am also committed to improving the professionalism of the City itself as I already started with implementing a 360 review for the City Manager and City Attorney, as well as more check-ins with them from the Commission to make sure goals and measurements are being met. The next two years will be pivotal to keeping the City moving along with these process changes and moving the Commission forward from a place of consensus so we can achieve these goals in a timely manner.
1) Housing and homelessness is a huge priority for our City. It is not an issue that can be solved by the City alone though. I have already worked over the last few years to build a relationship with non-profit partners and administrative partners from other jurisdictions to look for better immediate and long-term solutions than just trying to build affordable housing in the City, because that will not be enough. We need to have all interested parties at the table and work to find solutions in the very short term, as well as the future. The stress on the City and the neighborhoods is not something we can manage for the long-term.
2) The Strategic Plan is the first time in a generation or more that we have direct input from a wide array of citizens on what they see as our community priorities. While the City has certain obligations, this plan should be followed to guide priorities and not let individual officials or special interest try to move us away from it.
3) Aging infrastructure is also a priority. Stormwater has already been identified as an issue in the Strat. Plan and the DDA budget. We need to tackle more of our streets, sidewalks, and utility connectors as well and look at all of those as we plan future projects.
