I have a BS in Human Resources and have worked in HR for almost 27 years. I hold two senior level HR certifications and I'm a certified business coach. I have served on the City of Decatur Personnel Board for 12 years and I am the chair of Morgan County Personnel Review Board, where I have served for over 13 years. I have served on numerous other boards. The city council is a legislative body but it functions much like a board; I have experience in that. My volunteer work on the personnel board has given me insight into Decatur's processes. I want to optimize Decatur as I do for businesses in my consulting business. Make Decatur the best place to live, work, do business in and visit that we can with the resources available.
Before one can address any community concerns, one must know what they are. As I walk the district, I ask what concerns residents have. I also reach out on social media. I have already assisted some residents with their issues. If elected, I pledge to be proactive by periodically going to all areas of the district looking for things we are doing right and taking action on things we aren't.
I fully support the continued support of Decatur City Schools, Calhoun Community College and Athens State University through collaboration on impactful projects such as the Alabama Center for the Arts. These projects bring people to Decatur and increase our tax base. They also improve the quality of our workforce.
In order to grow we must have good housing and good infrastructure. We must continue the work on a new bridge into Decatur and fix the quagmire known as the "Y" coming into Decatur. Traffic during rush hour is a deterrent to people living in Decatur and working in Huntsville. We need more affordable housing but also mid-level housing and upscale. The good news is there is construction going on. We also have a development that has stopped due to the construction company running out of funds. We need to get this going again. This is not in my district but it is what is best for Decatur.
The city posts a calendar of all City Council meetings as well as all board meetings on the city website. The agenda and the materials for each Council meeting are also published. City Council meetings as well as most board meetings are televised live and can be found on the city's YouTube page. I don't think many citizens are aware of this. We could do a better job of getting the word out. I think we could do a better job of giving a brief description of what is being discussed in council meetings for the benefit of viewers at home. I am committed to posting updates on my Facebook page if elected. We have a current council member who does a good job of that!
Communication is the key. I find as I walk the district many people don't know what Decatur has to offer. How do we reach those people who don't read the paper or use much social media? I think it involves going into the district and attending various city events. People will talk to you one-on-one but one must be proactive, not everyone will seek you out. Meet the people where they are. This is the key and I am committed to doing it.
