Byron Township Proposal For 2% Excise Tax on Lodging Businesses to Fund Community Center
Shall the Township of Byron impose an excise tax on all persons engaged in the business of providing rooms for dwelling, lodging, or sleeping purposes, to transient guests, for a period less than 30 consecutive days, in the amount of 2% of the total charge for such accommodations, pursuant to Public Act 263 of 1974, as amended (“Act 263”). The levy of the excise tax would commence January 1, 2026 and would continue so long as the Township has in effect an ordinance authorizing the imposition of the excise tax.The purpose of the excise tax is to provide funds for the acquisition, construction, improvement, enlargement, repair, or maintenance of a Township community center, which could include, but is not limited to, convention halls, auditoriums, music halls, meeting rooms, exhibit areas, and related public areas. Revenue from the excise tax will be disbursed to the Township of Byron.
