Town where you live Blaine
If I was elected, I’d look to have a coffee with city councilman sessions to hear what people want and believe, and to help inform them as able. I’d ask the local paper for space to answer a question from a reader each week as well.
As related to Blaine and its being a seaside town, protecting our waterfront and water views is paramount. To put large buildings on the waterfront as city hall now wants to do puts the environment at risk. I’d push to rescind recent changes to code passed by council to prevent such building.
I have held no elected office. Public service though to me includes being a respectful, lawful and engaged citizen. In that I have spoken before council and written letters to the editor of our local paper. I took part in a community effort almost ten years ago to put in place codes and zoning the current city administration has thrown aside at the urging of developers looking to make a profit. I have been an active member of my neighborhood association. (One not brought together due an HOA situation but to build community).
Dealing with homelessness is something for which no one has come up with a good answer or solution. For those who are mentally ill on the streets we need to get them directed towards mental health care even a hospital stay. For those who just can’t afford a place to live, we in Blaine can stop approving condo and home building and build apartments. Those who need affordable living can’t afford a down payment and/or HOA. Give them something they can afford to get them started. I'm not in favor of free handouts for the homeless- housing or meals, because that will just attract more when the word gets out. Could there be public works projects though where the homeless can work in exchange for a meal voucher or room voucher? Parks are not acceptable place for the homeless to stay because parks belong to all of us, and any homeless trying to camp there should be removed. I would essentially live and let live as long as someone isn’t a threat to public safety or abusive to the environment.
A better versus bigger Blaine that first asks the public what they want to happen to our community. To bring back the public speaking at city council meetings that has not been allowed now for well into its second year. That there be accessibility for all to our seaside vistas, not just a privileged few. That our city council is again free of conflict of interest. That there is much more vision in our community development services (CDS). As we look to develop being better, let’s not live in a bubble but have our CDS personnel look to success stories out there. Let’s reach out with incentives to successful businesses to consider Blaine as also a place to do business. I’d like to see code enforcement too, something that has all but disappeared here. I want to see Marine Park (our last green space) remain green space instead of being crammed with sporting venues- and I write that as a person who is active in a variety of sporting pursuits. A Blaine that is better before bigger.
