Communications, Washington State Legislature; Speech and Debate Coach
My diverse experience has prepared me exceptionally well for serving on the Lakehaven Water and Sewer District board. My role as a Communications Aide for the Washington State Legislature has given me direct exposure to how public agencies operate, budget processes, and the importance of fiscal oversight, meaning I understand how to review complex budgets, ask the right questions about infrastructure investments, and ensure taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly. Managing digital content and leading Spanish translation initiatives demonstrates my commitment to making government accessible to all residents, which is particularly valuable for improving transparency and accessibility at Lakehaven. My extensive community involvement, from coaching Speech and Debate to hosting candidate forums, shows I know how to bring people together and facilitate productive discussions while understanding the concerns of everyday residents who rely on these essential services daily.
I was prompted to run because while Lakehaven may not make headlines, it directly impacts our daily lives. My experience in the Legislature showed me how essential fiscally responsible stewardship is for public resources. I see an opportunity to bring that same commitment to accountability and transparency to Lakehaven. Through my community involvement and translation work, I've witnessed how important it is for all residents to have access to information about services they rely on. The district manages 400 miles of water mainline, 350 miles of sewer mainline, and processes millions of gallons daily - this critical infrastructure deserves leadership that ensures maximum value from investments while keeping rates affordable and planning for future needs.
The most significant issues facing Lakehaven include aging infrastructure that requires strategic replacement and upgrades across our 400 miles of water mainline and 350 miles of sewer mainline to prevent costly emergency repairs. We must balance necessary infrastructure investments with keeping rates affordable for our 112,000 residents, especially as construction costs continue rising. Ensuring our two wastewater treatment plants can handle growing capacity demands while meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations is critical. We also face the challenge of maintaining our excellent fiscal record and clean audits while planning for future growth and climate resilience. Additionally, improving transparency and accessibility so all residents, including our Spanish-speaking community, can easily understand district operations and decisions is essential.
Our district plays a crucial role in protecting environmental health through responsible management of water resources and wastewater treatment. We must ensure our two wastewater treatment plants consistently meet or exceed environmental standards while processing millions of gallons daily, protecting local waterways and ecosystems. Our 22 wells and water distribution system must be managed sustainably to preserve groundwater resources for future generations. We have a responsibility to invest in infrastructure upgrades that reduce water loss, prevent contamination, and improve system efficiency. This includes modernizing aging pipelines to prevent leaks that waste precious water resources and upgrading treatment facilities to handle emerging contaminants. We should also explore opportunities for water conservation programs and educate residents about protecting our shared water resources.
