Ryan was born and raised in Yakima, where he graduated from Yakima Public Schools, and then graduated from Central Washington University. He is a residential Realtor, managing transactions for 29 years. He and his wife, Robin, have one son, who is a current student in the Yakima School District.
I spent eight years on the board of the Yakima Schools Foundation, which gave me insight into the excellent programing that occurs in our schools, and also taught me about some of the many funding challenges that our schools have.
I began my YSD board service four years ago, just as our schools were opening back up from the Covid closures and have witnessed the effects of Covid-era learning loss and declining enrollment.
Our district's Strategic Plan is scheduled to be reviewed in 2026... The current plan was crafted in 2020 with input from hundreds of community members. It is critical that we engage with the community for their input again, as we update this plan. I'm the only board member who has a current student in the school district, so I bring a unique parent-perspective to the conversation.
It's been an honor to serve, and I humbly ask for your vote.
1) Declining enrollment and the reduction in revenue that follows.
2) Academic improvement.
3) Individual building safety.
Thoughtful stewardship of our taxpayer resources can be achieved with disciplined budgeting. We must focus on our core academic responsibilities, and increase our reserves so that we can withstand financial uncertainty. Reductions are painful, but sometimes necessary to ensure that our district remains solvent.
As a parent, I've witnessed the safety improvements our district has made. The Centegix system, the "Handle with Care" policy and the creation of an in-district Security and Safety team are examples of those improvements. The district has also collaborated with the City of Yakima to address traffic issues around multiple school sites, resulting in huge improvements in traffic safety for our students, transportation department and neighbors.
We can, and will, continue to work on school site safety initiatives.
Students will always come first... and the interests of parents, families, taxpayers and staff have to be considered. No one group can be allowed to overshadow another.
Our district works towards very clear, defined objectives, and we must hold all parties accountable in the process.
