SEATTLE SCHOOL Director District No. 2

No Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members are the elected governing body of the school district, with responsibilities that fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight; diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district.

Experience (300 characters max) I am the parent of current 4th and 6th graders in SPS. I have been active on the PTA boards of our schools and am a frequenter of school board meetings. I studied mechanical engineering and history at Stanford, used to work for Oracle, and am a small business owner.
I prefer a soft and school culture based approach similar to Jane Adams MS. Students remain in possession of the devices their families saw fit to provide them, but agree not to use them except in accordance with policy, which is very limited. This respects family choice, sets clear expectations, and gives students the space to learn to control their own actions like they will need to for their whole lives.
There are certain central supports that benefit especially at risk students we must protect. Beyond that, everything needs to be weighed as competing with direct support for students (onsite staffing ratios). We can also better use technology to protect personal student attention.
The most impactful dollar spent on education, is one that gives a student time with an educator. This is the essence of pedagogy which literally means child leader.
I commit to having nobody fall between the cracks. I have been involved for years and many times felt like we were yelling into the wind. With permission I will keep tabs on everybody who testifies at board meetings or reaches out to me and help organize them into appropriate action groups and then connect them with relevant district employees.
