GRANDVIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 200 Director, District 5

No Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members are the elected governing body of the school district, with responsibilities that fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight as well as diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district.

I have a strong background in education that began when my children first started school. I volunteered in their classrooms, supporting teachers in any way I could. As my children grew older, my career shifted from journalism to school public relations. I served as the Grandview School District’s Communications Manager for nearly a decade, which gave me a deep understanding of the district’s operations, as well as the needs of our students, families, and staff. I currently work as the Director of Communications for Educational Service District 123 in Pasco, where I continue to support school districts across the region with their communications efforts.
I believe the three most pressing issues facing my school district are budget and long-term financial sustainability, school safety and security and strengthening relationships between the district and the community.
When it comes to budget, I believe every financial decision should be guided by the question: “What is best for our students?” We need to apply common sense budgeting and ensure our decisions are sustainable, not just for today, but for the future. I believe Grandview has done a strong job in this area, and I want to help continue that work.
Creating a safe school environment starts with building trust - between students and staff, and between families and the district. When people trust their schools, they are more likely to come forward when they see or hear something concerning. Safety plans, modernized facilities, and clear procedures are all important, but they only work well when there is a foundation of trust and open communication.
Each of these groups plays a critical role in our schools, and they all deserve to be heard. As a school board member, my door will always be open. I believe strong communication is the key to building partnerships, and when students, families, and staff work together, we can ensure every student receives the quality education they deserve.
