The first concern would be Drug and Alcohol Abuse, by our young people. Drugs are a problem in our borough as they are in many communities. As Mayor, I would be available as a resource to community nonprofits and churches as well as the Borough Police in their efforts to overcome this problem. The second concern is taxes. It is difficult to balance the services that the residences expect and deserve with the money required to make this happen. I would work with the Borough Council to find alternate means of funding to help keep property tax increases to a minimum. The third issue would be our Downtown. I would work with the Chamber of Commerce and the Borough Council to develop incentives for business to locate to our downtown.
Policing and Public Safety are two of the main responsibilities of the mayor. The residences need to feel that they are being protected by seeing our officers patrolling the community. Some of the best ways to accomplish this and to help build trust is to increase downtown foot patrols, bicycle patrols in parks and neighborhoods, and participating in the National Night Out program, as well as being visible at the Elizabethtown Fair. Our School Resource Officer (SRO) does a great job building relationships with students at our district schools. I would work with the Council and Police to ensure that this program continues.
I would encourage the Borough Council to take a serious look at providing Public Broadband and Ways and Means of funding it. A number of sewer mains need upgrading. This is an on-going project that is typically addressed prior to the annual street re-paving. I would work to continue this plan, using government grants whenever possible. We have a very nice series of Pedestrian Walking Paths in the community. We need to be mindful of future maintenance, again being creative in finding funding to avoid tax increases when possible. While water service in Elizabethtown is provided by The Elizabethtown Water Authority, and mayor having no direct involvement in that area, I would encourage mutual cooperation with the borough and water Authority.
It is important that the concerns of our residents are heard. As Mayor I will make my contact information available. I would encourage any resident to schedule a meeting with me whenever they have concerns. I would also be available at any Public Meeting of the Elizabethtown Borough Council to hear concerns voiced during the Public Comments section on the agenda.
