Langhorne Borough is being inundated by traffic and development threats to safety, historic character, and quality of life. Woods Services' plans to open much of its campus for development and the pending sale of the Oliver Heckman school are prompting developers to submit proposals that would bring hundreds of new housing units and massive amounts of traffic to the area. High volumes of heavy truck traffic are damaging the foundations of historic buildings, while speeding cars and trucks have made foot traffic less safe. All of this will become worse if PennDOT is allowed to move forward with its RC3 plans for a partial cloverleaf interchange that would bring four lanes of traffic to the historic district, and would remove the service roads along US 1 that have helped to mitigate traffic on local side streets.
Langhorne Borough historically has not backed down from a fight when the interests of the town and its citizens are at stake. My goal would be to ensure that the Borough explores all possible government, economic and legal avenues to achieve the best possible outcomes in our negotiations with PennDOT and developers to prevent projects that would alter the character of our town. We need to explore ways to moderate traffic issues through truck bans, a better police presence, pedestrian-safety crosswalks, one-way streets and more. We also need to work with the community to envision new opportunities to make the town even better, as well as to identify areas that are vulnerable to development or unhealthy change.
As a 38-year resident of Langhorne Borough, I have been active in local government and have supported a wide variety of programs. I'm a 15-year member of the Planning Commission, and have served as Chair since 2023. During that time, Planning Commission completed the Borough's first TND (Traditional Neighborhood Development) overlay district; instituted permitted use changes that are designed to increase protections for another large parcel; and is now embarking on an update to the Comprehensive Plan which I helped to create in 2014. We hope to begin this year as well an update to the Zoning Book and a second TND ordinance. My wife, Joanne, and I support Langhorne Open Space; Langhorne Council for the Arts; the Historic Langhorne Association; the Langhorne Community Memorial Association; and other local organizations and events.
