New Jersey has a non-responsive, non-transparent government that is essentially non-democratic. The Assembly members are chosen by a committee and are often put in power after the previous Assembly member has resigned, with no election. The Open Public Records Act has been gutted, reducing transparency. The number of signatures needed to run for General Assembly has gone up from 100 to 250, which led to a friend of mine not being able to run as a Democrat. Also, malrepresentation means that many voters are effectively disenfranchised, allowing the districts to be gerrymandered into one-party democratic districts where the politicians pick the voters, not the other way around. Most New Jerseyans do not even know the extremity of some of the laws. For example, an 11-year-old girl cannot receive most types of care without parental permission, but can have an abortion up to the day of birth, often with public money. New Jersey is not a liberal democracy and I want to change that.
I want to undo the gutting the Open Public Records Act. I want to eliminate all signature requirements to get on the ballot. I want constitutional amendments to give real power to counties, reduce the power of the State, especially the power of the Governor, and to change our Legislature from a plurality voting system to a hybrid plurality/proportional system. I also want to improve and expand DEI and affirmative action in public employment to include excluded peoples, such as Italian Americans, the disabled, and Catholics.
I would get rid of the inheritance tax, which discriminates against extended families. I would get rid of the yacht sales tax-exemption. I would create a charity-donation tax exemption, which does not exist on state tax returns. I would promote New Jersey brands, in sports, agriculture, and in public education, much more aggressively than is done currently. The New Jersey Devils deserve more government support. I would give power in the Constitution to counties over taxation and economic promotion. I would decentralize economic power. I would also encourage businesses to come into New Jersey with tax breaks and other incentives, while working to retain older New Jerseyans.
I would focus largely on supporting public education. I would work to decentralize education from the State to the counties, but also to give more power to counties over municipalities. I would ban magnet schools, which divide people by class, race, and ethnicity, while supporting charter schools in some cases. In general, I would support traditional public schools over private or other forms of public schools. I would support the Abbott decisions. I would hope to sit on the Education and Higher Education committees. I would expand DEI to include excluded groups, such as Italians, Catholics, and the disabled. I would also separate public education funding for the general budget and support a constitutional amendment that set aside a certain percentage of government proceeds to public education regardless of the rest of the annual budget. I would also rework the Social Studies curriculum and support world language education, especially the Italian language.
I support legal immigration and oppose unauthorized immigration. I oppose malrepresentation, which is the current, unconstitutional use of unauthorized immigrants to draw state and federal legislative districts, which discriminates against Italian and Indian American voters, among others.
