In my view, one of the most important issues facing Menomonie today is the state of our housing. We don't have enough housing for everyone, and frankly, the housing we do have is often either low quality or completely unaffordable. We need to build more housing of all kinds - houses, duplexes, apartments, small homes, you name it. We also need to take care of the buildings we do have, particularly our rental units, by beefing up the inspection department.
I would like to see the subsidies for non-profit organizations that were cut in the last city budget restored. The services organizations like Stepping Stones and The Bridge to Hope provide are vital, and the benefits they provide FAR outweigh the cost of the subsidy. Frankly, I see it as more of an investment than a subsidy. A second area of concern would be the affordable housing fund. So far, no city budget has made use of this fund, and we shouldn't keep sitting on this money with no action being taken.
