The main thing that differentiates me from the other candidate is that I am looking to change the status quo of the Big Foot High School board. Currently, the board does not see any issues with the district. This means that they have no desire to change anything, but I think that is wrong. Teachers in our district are not allowed to communicate directly with the board without fear of disciplinary action. All communications must be filtered through the district administrator first. The policies in question that should be repealed are 3112 and 4112, and they are open to the public. I encourage all voters to read the policies for themselves and see if they agree with them.
As a board member I will make it my goal to advance educational excellency at Big Foot. When I was a student, the school had a policy of 'Small classrooms, big opportunities.' I want to bring that mentality back to the district. A part of that will be casting a broad net for teacher candidates and making sure to hire the best people for every position. Diversity of thought is a great strength in any group of people, and I will push for teachers that help broaden students minds and worldviews.
A school board member should strive to hear the voices of the community and enact policies that reflect those voices. Board members are elected to serve the community and their job is to give the community what they want, in terms of education and opportunities for their children. Board members determine policy, budgets, and allocation of resources for the entire district. They also have a duty to advise and oversee the duties of the district administrator. Any action of the administrator is subject to the board, and should be the responsibility of the board.
