Race Description

I’m a current member of the School Board for the Lake Mills Area School District (LMASD), nearing the end of my first term. My law degree [J.D., City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law, 2002] differentiates me because I bring a lawyer’s eye to reading policies, statutes, & other documents. Also, as the parent of a Black Autistic daughter who attends Lake Mills Public Schools & who receives Special Education services, I have a unique perspective that gives me a better understanding of the experiences of marginalized students & their families. This perspective gives me personal experience with my daughter’s identities & culture not being reflected in her teachers & classmates.
The LMASD is mostly-White. Minority groups include students from multiple racial & ethnic backgrounds, of different genders & sexual orientations, from different socio-economic classes, & students with disabilities. We must acknowledge that students from marginalized groups often have different experiences in school, & work to address their concerns and support their success by reaching out to them and their parents to learn how the District can help them feel more welcome and comfortable at school – & then work with the District to address their needs. If re-elected, in my second term I will prioritize working with Administration to recruit and hire a more diverse faculty and staff, and to find ways to better-support minority students.
An LMASD School Board member should prepare for meetings by reading the materials provided by Administration & by consulting resources from the Lake Mills Education Association (LMEA), Citizens Alliance for Public Education (CAPE), Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB), Wisconsin Public Education Network (WPEN), Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), Wisconsin State Statutes, & by doing independent-research; listen to & collaborate with fellow Board members, administration, teachers, & staff; ask questions at meetings to better-understand issues that come before the Board; work to build consensus on the Board in setting policy & making other decisions; & be the bridge between the District and parents & community-members.
