Thank you LWV for this opportunity. My priorities, based on resident input via conversations and professional surveys show high levels of support for protections of ag lands, open space, natural beauty and rural character. I have, since 1997 made efforts to put these concerns into action. My priorities also include continuing the well-reasoned Town of Koshkonong budgeting that has kept property taxes affordable while providing better than average services to residents. I believe in earning my pay, so I volunteer for extra duty when need is there. With my many terms on the Town Board I have the experience to do as I preach. And since we’re just regular folks, I bring humor along too.
We are fortunate, as K-town residents, that incivility is uncommon. I believe that neighbor frictions, for instance, can be reduced by thoughtful rule-making that anticipates irritations. Common problems start with things like noise, smoke, excessive lighting etc. Public discussions can lead to good ordinances. Resident input on issues before the Board has been a priority and has brought about good solutions. I favor continuing that, plus even more effort to help people to buy in to their role as town citizens. With my ten years on the Town Board, I have learned that most people are good and with that understanding, good things can happen in our local community.
Social services are not usually a town’s mission. One exception is emergency services, i.e. ambulance and fire protection. The thorniest issue is ambulance service. The cost for local ambulance service contracts has ballooned in recent years and the quality of service is not consistent throughout Jefferson County. As a Jefferson County Supervisor and member of the Executive Committee, I have been in numerous meetings where this issue has been addressed. It is a new-ish effort and so several solutions are now being considered. At this time a committee of local officials, providers and others is being formed to tackle this problem. A solution will need inter-government cooperation. Stay tuned, this is on the front burner.
