I was elected to the school board in 2022 and am now running for reelection. In the past three years, I have learned so much about the interactions, processes and responsibilities of the school board. I have learned about the budgetary process which is very complex. These are all areas that take time to get to know and I feel well-equipped to go into another board term with this experience. My education, engineering and law degrees, and professional experience, people and project management, have developed my skills in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. All three of these skills are critical for a school board member. If reelected, I will continue the hard work and dedication it takes to be a school board member.
The district's 5-year strategic plan is grounded in an inclusive high-performing culture of growth and community. To fully execute the district's vision, mission, beliefs and goal areas, it is important to have a staff that reflects the diversity of the student body and for all students to have role models and teachers in which they can see their future selves. The recruitment and hiring process is executed through the district administration. In a competitive market, finding the most qualified staff person that brings professional experience, innovation, enthusiasm and their own personal background to the position is key. Also, offering diverse programs exposes students to different interests and staff who have passion in the area.
The role of the school board is to provide strategic direction for the district, including policy and budget areas. It is a school board member's responsibility to fully understand the financial situation of the district, the current policies and the strategic direction the district has been given by past boards. A school board member must ask questions and analyze data to consider all aspects of a decision. Considerations brought to the board are complex and oftentimes there are multiple options for providing direction. However, school board members need to seek out information and ensure the direction they provide will move the district forward in a positive way while being financially responsible to the taxpayers.
